Three athletes who have trained and developed their skills in Jalandhar, Punjab, have been named in the Indian athletics contingent for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2026. The prestigious multi-sport event is scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 22.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) recently unveiled a 32-member squad for the athletics disciplines. Among those selected are sprinter Gurindervir Singh and middle-distance runner Rashdeep Kaur. While Gurindervir Singh hails directly from Jalandhar, Rashdeep Kaur, though originally from Sangrur, honed her athletic abilities in Jalandhar for a decade.
Gurindervir Singh has earned a place in the men’s 100-meter race, showcasing his speed and potential on the international stage. Rashdeep Kaur will compete as part of the women’s 4×400-meter mixed relay team. Adding further distinction for the region, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a shot put contender, has also been included in the Commonwealth Games squad. Toor has reportedly trained under a coach based in Jalandhar, underscoring the district’s contribution to his preparation.
Information was available with The Chenab Times regarding Rashdeep Kaur’s journey, which highlights considerable dedication and resilience. She was born into a family with limited financial resources; her father cultivates a modest 2-acre plot of farmland. Her mother, Gurpinder Kaur, has spoken previously about the significant sacrifices the family endured to support their daughter’s aspirations in sports. She had stated, “We did not have much, but we never let her dreams die.” Despite the financial constraints, the family remained steadfast in their commitment to ensuring Rashdeep had the opportunity to pursue her athletic career without external dependency.
Both Gurindervir Singh and Rashdeep Kaur received their foundational athletic training in Jalandhar under the guidance of the well-regarded coach Sarabjit Singh Happy. Coach Happy expressed immense pleasure and pride over the selection of his trainees, describing it as a momentous occasion for Jalandhar. He extended his best wishes to both athletes for their performance at the Commonwealth Games.
The selection of these athletes serves as a testament to Jalandhar’s established reputation as a hub for sporting talent. The district has a history of nurturing athletes who go on to achieve success at national and international levels, further bolstering its rich sporting culture.
The Commonwealth Games are a major international sporting event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The 2026 edition in Glasgow is expected to bring together thousands of athletes from over 70 countries and territories to compete in a wide range of sports.
The Indian contingent, particularly the athletics team, will be looking to build on previous successes and bring home medals. The dedication and hard work of athletes like Gurindervir Singh, Rashdeep Kaur, and Tajinderpal Singh Toor exemplify the growing strength of Indian sports on the global platform. Their connection to Jalandhar provides a local anchor for national pride, showcasing how regional training grounds contribute significantly to the development of elite athletes.
