Tanvir Sadiq, a prominent leader from Jammu and Kashmir, has urged the central government to implement comprehensive measures to avert further leaks of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination papers. His remarks come in the wake of discussions surrounding a ban on the messaging application Telegram, which has been implicated in the alleged circulation of leaked examination materials.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Sadiq, who is also the chief spokesperson for the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, emphasized the need for robust security protocols throughout the examination process. He highlighted that the integrity of such crucial national examinations is paramount and any compromise can have far-reaching consequences for aspiring students.
The NEET-UG examination, a critical gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India, has been marred by allegations of paper leaks in recent years. These incidents have led to widespread student protests, legal challenges, and significant distress for candidates and their families. The purported use of platforms like Telegram for disseminating leaked papers has brought the security of online communication channels under scrutiny.
Sadiq, who represents the Zadibal constituency in Srinagar, stressed that while the ban on certain applications might be considered, the core issue lies in preventing the compromise of examination papers at their source. He called for a thorough investigation into the existing examination system, from the setting of question papers to their printing and distribution, to identify and plug any vulnerabilities.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the National Testing Agency (NTA), responsible for conducting NEET, has been under immense pressure to reform its examination procedures. Following previous controversies, the NTA had announced several measures, including enhanced security protocols and the use of multiple sets of question papers. However, the recurring allegations suggest that these measures may not be entirely foolproof.
The leader from Jammu and Kashmir also pointed out the emotional and financial toll these leaks take on students who dedicate years of hard work towards preparing for these competitive examinations. He urged the government to ensure transparency and accountability in the examination process to restore the faith of students and the public in the integrity of national testing systems.
Legal experts and educationists have also voiced concerns over the persistent paper leak incidents, suggesting a need for stricter enforcement of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. This legislation aims to curb malpractices in public examinations, including the leakage of question papers and organized cheating. The focus remains on identifying the perpetrators and dismantling the networks involved in these alleged leakages.
The ongoing investigations by agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are expected to shed more light on the modus operandi of those involved in the NEET paper leaks. The government has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation and taking all necessary steps to ensure fair and equitable opportunities for all aspiring candidates.
