SRINAGAR: A 45-year-old man has sustained burn injuries after being struck by lightning in the Wani Doursa area of Lolab, located in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir. The incident occurred on Tuesday amidst inclement weather conditions.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the injured individual has been identified as Showkat Khursheed Mir, son of Khursheed Ahmad Mir, a resident of Wani Doursa. He suffered injuries to his leg, abdomen, and left arm as a result of the lightning strike.
Following the incident, local residents promptly reached the scene and provided immediate assistance. They transported Mr. Mir to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) in Sogam for medical treatment.
Sources at the hospital indicated that the patient has been admitted and is currently under observation. Medical professionals are closely monitoring his condition.
The meteorological department had previously forecast inclement weather across the Kashmir Valley, including chances of thunderstorms and lightning in certain areas. Such weather phenomena, while often localized, can pose significant risks to individuals caught outdoors without adequate shelter.
Lightning strikes are a known hazard during monsoon seasons and periods of heavy rainfall, particularly in regions with varied topography like the Kashmir Valley. The intensity of the strike can vary, leading to a range of injuries from minor burns to severe trauma, and in some cases, fatalities. Medical experts advise seeking immediate shelter indoors or in substantial buildings when lightning is imminent.
The Sub-District Hospital Sogam is equipped to handle emergency medical situations, and the healthcare team is providing the necessary care for Mr. Mir’s injuries. Further details regarding the full extent of his injuries and his recovery progress are expected to be released as they become available.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the importance of heeding weather advisories, especially during periods of severe atmospheric conditions. Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns and issue advisories to ensure public safety.
