Leh, Jul 10: The Union Territory of Ladakh has taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability with the inauguration of its first electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena officiated the launch on Friday, emphasizing the move as crucial for the region’s ambition to become carbon neutral.

These newly installed stations are equipped with advanced features, including two fast-charging guns at each location. These guns are designed to charge electric vehicles up to 80 percent capacity in approximately 30 minutes to one hour. Comprehensive fire safety measures and emergency shutdown systems are integrated into the facilities, officials stated.

The establishment of this charging network is intended to bolster electric mobility by providing accessible and efficient charging infrastructure for both residents and the numerous tourists who frequent the high-altitude region. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision for Ladakh to transition to a carbon-neutral economy by leveraging clean energy sources.

Lieutenant Governor Saxena described the launch as a historic milestone, underscoring Ladakh’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable transportation. He highlighted that the initiative is a direct reflection of the administration’s dedication to environmentally responsible development, particularly given the fragile ecosystem of the Himalayan region.

Saxena appealed to the residents of Ladakh to embrace electric mobility, encouraging a gradual shift away from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles. He stated that such a transition is vital for mitigating pollution levels and preserving Ladakh’s unique ecological heritage. The adoption of electric vehicles is seen as a key strategy to reduce the territory’s reliance on fossil fuels.

The move is expected to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by addressing range anxiety and providing convenient charging points across key locations in Ladakh. This development is anticipated to contribute significantly to reducing the carbon footprint of transportation in the Union Territory.
