A man has been arrested in Kalyan, Mumbai, after a video of him allegedly assaulting a police constable while in a drunken state went viral on social media. The incident occurred late on Sunday night when the constable responded to a public disturbance call.
Drunken Man Attacks Police Constable in Kalyan
The arrested individual has been identified as Rahul Tayde, a resident of Kalyan. According to reports, Tayde was creating a disturbance in the Gauripada area, knocking on doors and shouting loudly in the early hours of Sunday. Locals alerted the police control room due to the commotion.
Police Constable Ganesh Chavan, attached to the Khadakpada Police Station, was dispatched to the scene to address the situation. During an argument with the constable, Tayde allegedly picked up a wooden stick and assaulted Chavan while the officer was performing his official duties. The entire assault was captured on nearby CCTV cameras, with the footage subsequently being widely shared online.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Khadakpada police have registered a case against Tayde under relevant sections of the law for assaulting and obstructing a public servant from discharging their duty. He has been taken into custody, and an investigation is currently in progress.
Viral CCTV Footage Sparks Outrage
The viral CCTV footage of the assault has drawn significant public attention and condemnation. The video clearly shows the accused repeatedly attacking the police constable. Social media users have expressed their outrage over the incident, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
This incident is one of several recent cases in Mumbai where individuals have allegedly assaulted or verbally abused police personnel. In August 2024, a man in Andheri was arrested for manhandling and threatening a constable while claiming to be the son of a senior police officer. Another incident in October 2020 saw two individuals arrested for assaulting a traffic policeman in Kalbadevi after the act was recorded on video.
The Maharashtra government and Mumbai Police have often reiterated their stance against such attacks on police officers, emphasizing that strict action will be taken against offenders. The viral nature of such incidents underscores the public’s awareness and condemnation of violence against law enforcement officials.
