In a significant departure from tradition, the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ will be played for the first time from the ramparts of the Red Fort during the upcoming Independence Day celebrations in the national capital. This marks the commemoration of 150 years of the patriotic composition.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Ministry of Defence, which hosts the annual event, confirmed the inclusion of ‘Vande Mataram’ in this year’s proceedings. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh stated that the song will be rendered as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives at the venue. This will be followed by the customary flag hoisting ceremony and the playing of the national anthem, after which the Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver his address to the nation.
The decision to include ‘Vande Mataram’ is a central element of this year’s Independence Day festivities, honouring its historical and cultural significance. The ministry officials highlighted that the commemoration aligns with the 150th anniversary of the song, underscoring its enduring legacy in India’s freedom struggle and national identity.
Beyond the musical commemoration, the Defence Secretary addressed other aspects of the event. When questioned about the potential connection between the renewed focus on ‘Yuva Shakti’ (youth power) and recent protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Mr. Singh clarified that the programme’s theme had been decided well in advance of the demonstrations. Discussions also touched upon the protocol for seating arrangements for political dignitaries. The Defence Secretary assured that seating would adhere strictly to the ‘Table of Precedence,’ a system notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Further details regarding the venue’s setup revealed that the seating enclosures at the Red Fort will be named after various lakes across India.
