Jammu and Kashmir High Court Adjusts August Holiday, Designates December Working Day

SRINAGAR: The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has officially revised its holiday and working day schedule, designating August 26 as a court holiday and December 19 as a working day.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Registrar General of the High Court issued a notification detailing these changes. Initially, August 25, a Tuesday, was marked as a holiday in observance of Eid-i-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW). However, this day has now been declared a “non-sitting day” for the High Court. Consequently, August 26 has been designated as a holiday for the court.

The notification further clarified that December 19, previously designated a non-sitting day as per High Court Order No. 1313 of 2026/RG/NG-15(I) dated June 19, 2026, will now function as a “working day” for the High Court. This adjustment is made in lieu of the change concerning August 25, ensuring the court’s operational calendar is formally updated.

The decision impacts the administrative and judicial functioning of the High Court, aligning the schedule with specific observances and operational requirements. Such adjustments are common in judicial administrations to accommodate significant religious or public holidays while ensuring the continuity of legal processes. The High Court, serving both the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh, issues such notifications periodically to inform all stakeholders, including legal practitioners, court staff, and the general public, about changes in its sitting and holiday schedules.

The practice of declaring specific days as non-sitting or working days is crucial for the efficient management of judicial dockets and court operations. These notifications ensure transparency and provide advance notice, allowing for necessary preparations and adjustments within the legal fraternity. The specific dates chosen often reflect a balance between public holidays and the need to maintain a consistent judicial calendar, particularly for appellate courts that handle a significant volume of cases.

This official directive from the High Court ensures that all parties involved are aware of the altered schedule, preventing any confusion or disruption in court proceedings. The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh plays a pivotal role in the judicial landscape of the region, and such administrative decisions directly influence the accessibility of justice and the progression of legal matters within its jurisdiction. The modification of the holiday for Eid-i-Milad-un-Nabi and its compensatory working day in December are administrative measures designed to manage court operations effectively.
