Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and its workforce, highlighting their pivotal role in elevating India’s standing in the global space arena. He emphasized that the international confidence reposed in ISRO is a direct outcome of the unwavering commitment and diligent efforts of its scientists, engineers, and technicians across generations.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Prime Minister’s commendations followed a recent communication from nine ISRO employee associations to the organisation’s chairman. These associations had sought clarification regarding the proposed transfer of ISRO’s manufacturing and operational capabilities to private entities, raising concerns about the future trajectory of the agency and its impact on current and prospective employees.
Speaking virtually at the inaugural International Space Summit in Paris, Prime Minister Modi stated that ISRO, a cornerstone of India’s space research endeavors, has garnered international acclaim for its operational excellence and cost-effectiveness in its missions. He detailed how ISRO’s advanced technologies provide crucial support to sectors such as agriculture and fisheries, enhance weather forecasting and disaster management, and facilitate navigation.
The Prime Minister further noted that ISRO’s launch capabilities have been instrumental in sending over 430 satellites from 34 different countries into orbit aboard Indian rockets. “ISRO’s technologies and partnerships serve not only India, but the wider world,” he remarked, adding that the global trust in the organization is built upon the dedication and hard work of numerous Indian scientists, engineers, and technicians. He elaborated that through their relentless efforts, they have meticulously built ISRO’s global reputation, mission by mission, success by success, thereby securing a distinguished position for India among spacefaring nations.
Prime Minister Modi also referenced recent significant achievements, including the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which marked India as the first nation to successfully land near the lunar south pole, and the ongoing Aditya-L1 mission, which is focused on unraveling the mysteries of the Sun. Looking towards future ambitions, he mentioned that an Indian is slated to visit the International Space Station this year, with plans to establish an Indian space station by 2035 and send an Indian astronaut to the Moon by 2040. He reiterated that a core principle guiding these endeavors is to ensure that their benefits extend to all of humanity.
In parallel with ISRO’s established excellence, the Prime Minister acknowledged the burgeoning growth of India’s private space sector, observing that the dynamism of private enterprise is now complementing ISRO’s technical prowess. This synergy, he suggested, is accelerating India’s overall progress in space exploration and application.
