Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: A prominent political leader has called for stringent government action and accountability regarding alleged landfilling activities at the Brari Nambal waterbody in Srinagar. The former minister stressed that mere partial demolition of recently constructed structures would be insufficient to rectify the environmental damage inflicted upon the ecologically sensitive area.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the former minister stated that the reported landfilling had persisted for approximately two weeks. He raised critical questions concerning the origin of the filling material and the authorities responsible for permitting the activity to continue unchecked. He emphasized that addressing the situation solely through the demolition of structures erected after the fact would constitute an ineffective measure, or an “eye wash,” failing to hold accountable those responsible for the initial encroachment and any subsequent administrative lapses in oversight.
The leader urged for a comprehensive investigation to identify all individuals involved in the alleged violation. He advocated for the complete removal of all dumped material and the subsequent restoration of the Brari Nambal waterbody, with the costs to be borne by the encroachers. Furthermore, he demanded that FIRs be registered and prosecution initiated against those found guilty of such transgressions, ensuring that legal recourse follows any established offenses.
Highlighting the broader environmental implications, the former minister underscored the urgent necessity of protecting Kashmir’s remaining lakes, wetlands, and other vital water bodies. He articulated a vision for future generations to inherit a healthy natural environment, rather than land that has been indiscriminately filled and developed. This plea emphasized a moral and ecological imperative to safeguard these natural resources from further degradation.
He further commented that the preservation of waterbodies and the enforcement of environmental laws do not hinge on the political status of the region but rather on demonstrable political will, administrative seriousness, and the collective responsibility of citizens.
