Patiala Student Secures Global Essay Prize in London

Kabir Singh Shergill, a student from Yadavindra Public School in Patiala, has achieved a significant academic milestone by becoming the first Indian to win a prize in the junior category of the prestigious John Locke Institute’s Global Essay Prize. He was awarded third prize at a ceremony held in London, where he received the accolade from Martin Cox, the Director General of the John Locke Institute. This achievement places him among a select group of four previous winners from India in the competition’s history.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that this year’s competition saw an unprecedented participation of 1,00,227 candidates hailing from 183 countries. As part of his recognition, Kabir has also been awarded a scholarship for a summer programme at the esteemed University of Oxford. He joined other finalists from across the globe at the Institute’s exclusive three-day Academic Conference and Awards Weekend in London. The event featured notable speakers, including the Dean of Admissions from Brown University and distinguished professors from the University of Oxford.

Shergill’s winning essay tackled the thought-provoking question, “Does Che deserve his iconic T-shirt?” In his submission, he posited that the widely recognized image does not accurately represent the historical figure of Che Guevara but rather substitutes the complex individual with a simplified cultural icon. His research, conducted at a museum in New Delhi, led him to draw parallels with portraits of Viceroys, which he argued often present a singular perspective of historical narratives. Kabir concluded that the ubiquitous T-shirt image has evolved into a symbol of consumerism rather than a genuine tribute to the revolutionary figure.

Reflecting on his win, Kabir Singh Shergill expressed his disbelief and gratitude. “When they called my name in London, I could hardly believe it. The field was so strong, and I never expected to win,” he stated. He further elaborated on the enriching experience of spending three days engaging with leading academics and students from diverse international backgrounds, discussing critical issues such as leadership and contemporary global affairs. “This is something I will remember for the rest of my life. I’m grateful to my teachers and my family for their support,” he added.
