The Border Security Force (BSF) conducted two successful operations along the International Border in Amritsar district on Wednesday, recovering over 11 kilograms of narcotics, a pistol, and a damaged drone. These seizures highlight ongoing efforts to combat cross-border smuggling activities.
The Chenab Times has learned that in the first operation, the BSF seized more than 5 kilograms of heroin in the Kahngarh border outpost area. Following this recovery, a case was formally registered at the Gharinda police station. The legal action was initiated under Sections 21, 61, and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, based on a complaint filed by the Border Security Force.
In a subsequent operation, the BSF intercepted another consignment near the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari. This recovery included approximately 5.5 kilograms of narcotic powder. Alongside the contraband, the BSF also seized a Zigana pistol, identified as a Tisas model manufactured in Türkiye, and a damaged DJI Matrice 400 quadcopter drone. This drone is believed to have been utilized for smuggling purposes.
The discovery of the pistol and drone led to the registration of a separate case. This legal proceeding falls under the purview of the NDPS Act, the Arms Act, and the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, addressing the illegal possession of firearms and the unauthorized use of aerial vehicles for illicit activities.
These recoveries underscore the persistent challenges faced by security forces in preventing the flow of illegal substances and arms into the country through the sensitive International Border. The BSF continues to maintain a vigilant watch along the border to thwart such smuggling attempts and enhance national security.
The operational success in Amritsar is part of a broader national strategy to curb drug trafficking and maintain the integrity of India’s borders. Narcotics smuggling often funds anti-national activities, making the BSF’s role in interdicting these shipments critical.
The use of drones for smuggling has become an increasing concern for security agencies across the globe. These unmanned aerial vehicles can transport small to moderate quantities of contraband over borders, posing a unique challenge for interdiction efforts. The recovery of a damaged drone in this instance suggests that such attempts are not always successful, providing valuable intelligence for future operations.
The NDPS Act is a comprehensive legislation in India designed to control and regulate operations relating to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. It provides for stringent penalties for offenders involved in the production, possession, sale, purchase, transport, and use of such substances. The Arms Act governs the acquisition, possession, and carrying of arms and ammunition in India, aiming to prevent violence and illegal activities involving firearms.
The Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, commonly known as the Drone Rules, 2024, provides a framework for the operation of drones in Indian airspace, including provisions for their use in illegal activities. The inclusion of this act in the chargesheet indicates the sophisticated methods being employed by smugglers.
Amritsar district, bordering Pakistan, has historically been a sensitive area where security forces regularly encounter attempts at infiltration and smuggling of narcotics, weapons, and counterfeit currency. The BSF, mandated to guard the India-Pakistan International Border, works in close coordination with the Punjab Police to maintain law and order and ensure border security.
The recovered heroin is a highly addictive and dangerous substance, and its large-scale recovery indicates a significant disruption to the supply chain that could have reached various parts of the country. The BSF’s proactive measures and intelligence-led operations have been instrumental in making such seizures.
Further investigations into the origin and intended destination of the recovered narcotics and the pistol are likely underway. Security agencies will be seeking to dismantle the entire network involved in this cross-border smuggling operation. The recovery highlights the ongoing commitment of the Border Security Force to safeguarding the nation’s frontiers against criminal elements.
