In a significant development, the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir has apprehended Gowhar Ahmad Reshi, a Block Development Council (BDC) member, on charges of demanding and accepting bribes in Ganderbal district.
The arrest follows a complaint filed by an authorized material supplier against Majid Aziz, District Mineral Officer Ganderbal, and Gowhar Ahmad Reshi. The complainant alleged that despite completing all procedural formalities, the issuance of a disposal permit was unreasonably delayed by DMO Ganderbal Majid Aziz. When the complainant approached Majid Aziz, he was directed to visit BDC member Gowhar Ahmad and comply with his demands.
According to an ACB spokesman, Gowhar Ahmad Reshi allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 for the issuance of the disposal permit, with Rs 10,000 to be paid in advance. Opting not to succumb to bribery, the complainant reported the matter to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, initiating a thorough investigation.
The ACB swiftly registered Case FIR No. 01/2024 under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 at PS ACB Srinagar. A dedicated trap team was formed and successfully caught Gowhar Ahmad Reshi red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000 in bribe money from the complainant. The recovered funds were seized on the spot.
Gowhar Ahmad Reshi, identified as the son of Sonaullah Reshi from Safapora Ganderbal, now faces legal proceedings. Meanwhile, the role of DMO Majid Aziz in the matter is under investigation.
