Four Army jawans from an artillery unit lost their lives in the firing incident that took place in the early hours of Wednesday. The Army’s statement confirms that the area has been sealed off, and joint investigations with the Punjab Police are underway to establish the facts of the case. The families of the deceased have been informed, and the Army has expressed its condolences for their loss.
The statement also confirms that no other injuries to personnel or loss/damage to property have been reported, indicating that the incident was confined to the affected area.
The Army is currently ascertaining all aspects of the case, including the possible involvement of an INSAS rifle and the missing 28 rounds that were reported two days prior to the incident.
Incident Details
According to reports, the area has been sealed off, and joint investigations with the Punjab Police are being coordinated to establish the facts of the case. The HQ South Western Command of the Army has confirmed that four Army jawans succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained during the incident. However, no other injuries to personnel or loss/damage to property have been reported.
“All aspects, including the possible case of involvement of an INSAS rifle along with 28 rounds reported missing two days back, are being ascertained,” the statement added.
The Army has activated Station Quick Reaction Teams, and search operations are in progress. Bathinda Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulneet Singh Khurana confirmed that “something” has happened but said the Army has not shared any details with them. He added that internal combing operations by the Army are underway.
Sources indicate that some weapons had gone missing from an artillery unit in the station a couple of days ago. A search operation was on for these missing weapons, the sources added. However, the exact circumstances leading up to the firing incident are yet to be determined.
