In a significant development for the region’s legal framework, the first First Information Report (FIR) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been successfully registered at the Model Police Station in Doda of Doda district in Chenab Valley area of Jammu division. This landmark case, bearing FIR number 170/2024, was officially logged under sections 281 and 125(a) of the new BNS law.
A police officer from the district police headquarters in Doda confirmed the registration, highlighting the historical importance of this event. “This FIR represents a notable milestone in our region’s law enforcement, signifying the transition from colonial-era laws to a modern legal framework that better aligns with our national aspirations and cultural values,” the officer stated.
The registration occurred on the midnight of June 30, coinciding with the nation’s collective farewell to the outdated British colonial laws of the late nineteenth century. This shift marks a significant leap forward as the country adopts new criminal laws designed to reflect the local, cultural, and civilizational ethos of its citizens.
With the enactment of the BNS and other related legal frameworks, the Jammu and Kashmir Police are now poised to leverage advanced digital technologies. These include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), cloud computing, and drone technology, aimed at enhancing the precision and efficiency of crime investigation, prevention, and detection. The implementation of these technologies is expected to facilitate continuous surveillance and monitoring, contributing to a more peaceful and crime-free society.
This first FIR under the BNS is just the beginning of what promises to be a transformative era in criminal justice in Jammu and Kashmir.
