Following nearly 18 hours of protests and a district-wide shutdown, the family of Ghulam Hussain Dar, who tragically lost his life in an accident at the Dangdoru hydropower project site, has reached a resolution with JP Company, the site’s management, through the intervention of the Kishtwar district administration. The decision to end the shutdown came after officials including HOP CVPP and Kishtwar’s Revenue Department met with Dar’s family, presenting both immediate financial assistance and commitments to ongoing support.
Sources told The Chenab Times that the company administration provided the family with an initial compensation of Rs. 5 lakh, with an additional Rs. 15 lakh to be disbursed in the coming weeks. To support the family further, officials assured them that JP Company would provide a monthly ration as long as the company’s operations continued in the area.
Imam Farooq Ahmed Kichloo of Jamia Masjid Kishtwar, who led the call for the shutdown, announced the withdrawal of protests once the family’s demands were accepted in writing by JP Company and district officials. The commitment to Dar’s family has been met with relief among local residents, though demands for improved workplace safety persist.
Pooja Thakur, Chairperson of the District Development Council (DDC) Kishtwar, spoke after the agreement, emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced safety protocols to prevent further accidents. “Many of these incidents are preventable,” Thakur stated, attributing the primary cause to the lack of designated signalers, or spotters, for heavy machinery on site. She urged JP Company to take strict action and to appoint signalers for all operational vehicles to reduce the risk of future tragedies.
