New Delhi, Jan 13 – Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has drawn sharp criticism after making controversial remarks about Hindi-speaking individuals and women in leadership roles during an interview with journalist Samdish Bhatia. Singh, the father of legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, described Hindi as “unmanly” and made disparaging comments about gender dynamics in positions of power.
“When men speak Hindi, it feels like, ‘Kaun bol raha hai, kaisa aadmi hai’ (who is speaking, what type of a man is he?),” Singh said in the interview on Unfiltered, while mimicking Hindi speakers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In contrast, he praised Punjabi as a “manly” language, further fueling the controversy.
Singh also commented on women in leadership, stating, “Wife will destroy your house if you give her power. Sorry to say, Indira Gandhi ran this country and destroyed it. Give them respect and love, but never give them power.”
Adding to his incendiary statements, Singh claimed he had once wanted to kill Kapil Dev, captain of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, after being dropped from the national side.
The comments have ignited a storm on social media, with widespread backlash against Singh for his remarks. Critics called his statements misogynistic, regressive, and disrespectful to Hindi speakers.
“The way anti-Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan, Yograj Singh has made fun of Hindi,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Another netizen condemned his comments, saying, “Yograj Singh’s labeling of Hindi as ‘the language of women’ is not only misogynistic but also an insult to millions who speak and cherish the language. Such rhetoric undermines both women and India’s linguistic heritage.”
Yograj Singh’s Background
Singh represented India in one Test and six ODIs between December 1980 and February 1981 under Sunil Gavaskar’s captaincy. His international career lasted less than three months.
Known for his outspoken nature, Singh has courted controversy on multiple occasions. His latest remarks have raised questions about the responsibility of public figures in maintaining respectful discourse on cultural and gender issues.
