Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) has organised a plantation drive at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Soura, coinciding with the retirement of the school’s principal, Firdous Ali. The initiative marks the formal adoption of the school by NLCO and signifies a commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the event served as both a ceremonial farewell for Principal Firdous Ali and a declaration of intent by NLCO to undertake long-term responsibility for the upkeep and protection of the newly planted trees within the school premises. This move aims to establish a sustainable green space for the educational institution and future generations.
Manzoor Wangnoo, Chairman of NLCO, addressed the gathering, emphasising the organisation’s dedication to nurturing and safeguarding the plantation. He stated that NLCO would ensure the initiative blossoms into a lasting environmental asset, fostering a sense of responsibility and continuity.
The programme saw the presence of several distinguished guests and community members, including Qazi Imran, Dr G N Itoo, Dr Saleem Beg, Prof Altaf Sahib, Dr Tawseef Bhat, Nadeem, Aadil, Rifat Qadri, CEO Budgam, Nusrat Bukhari, former Principal GHSS Kothibagh, Prof Dr Bilal Rafiq Shah, Hilal Ahmad Bhat, and Urdu scholar Javed Ahmad Mattoo, alongside members of the NLCO and the local populace.
Qazi Imran, speaking at the event, highlighted the significance of environmental responsibility, drawing parallels with Islamic teachings. He underscored that the care of nature is an intrinsic moral and spiritual duty, and such initiatives reflect a profound commitment to both faith and societal well-being.
The NLCO acknowledged and appreciated the active involvement of the local community, stressing that their participation is crucial for the sustained success and long-term viability of environmental conservation efforts.
Wangnoo described the plantation drive as a “living legacy,” symbolising a new chapter for Firdous Ali, whose past contributions to education and society are intended to serve as an inspiration. He expressed NLCO’s anticipation of Ali’s continued guidance, particularly in the realms of education and environmental awareness.
