Jammu and Kashmir: Body of Uttar Pradesh Youth Recovered from Jhelum in Srinagar

SRINAGAR — The body of an 18-year-old youth from Uttar Pradesh, who had reportedly jumped into the Jhelum River on April 22, was recovered on Monday by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams. The recovery operation concluded after a five-day search in the river near Old Zaina Kadal in Srinagar.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that SDRF Quick Response Team (QRT) Jhelum personnel located the body during their search operations on Monday morning. The deceased has been identified as Mohd Quresh Siddiqi, son of Mohd Nawab Siddiqi, a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

Following the recovery, officials stated that the body was handed over to the local police. Medico-legal formalities are being completed after the body was shifted to a medical facility. The incident marks the end of an extensive search effort that spanned nearly a week, involving specialized teams to navigate the challenging river conditions.

The circumstances leading to Mohd Quresh Siddiqi’s jump into the Jhelum River are under investigation by the police. Authorities are working to ascertain the sequence of events that preceded the tragic incident. The Jhelum River, particularly in urban areas like Srinagar, presents significant risks due to its strong currents and depth, complicating search and rescue operations.

The recovery of bodies from the Jhelum River, especially after prolonged periods, often requires the deployment of advanced equipment and highly trained personnel. SDRF teams are equipped to handle such demanding rescue missions, utilizing boats, diving gear, and trained swimmers to comb through the riverbed and water column. The extended duration of the search underscores the difficulties faced in retrieving individuals who have entered the river.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges associated with ensuring public safety along the riverbanks in the region. Authorities often issue advisories regarding the dangers of approaching fast-moving water bodies, especially during periods of increased flow or inclement weather. However, such appeals are not always heeded, leading to unfortunate incidents.

The repatriation of the body to Uttar Pradesh for final rites will be facilitated by the authorities after the completion of all necessary legal procedures. The Srinagar Police have registered a case and are continuing their inquiry into the matter to understand the full details surrounding the youth’s death.
