Washington D.C. – A potential tragedy was averted Saturday evening when Secret Service agents successfully stopped an armed individual from entering the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, attempted to breach a security checkpoint with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:36 p.m. local time, as President Donald Trump and members of his administration were in attendance. According to law enforcement officials, Allen charged the security checkpoint, exchanging gunfire with Secret Service agents. One agent was struck by a bullet but was protected by a ballistic vest and is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and transported to a local hospital for evaluation. No other attendees were reported to be seriously injured.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Allen had sent a message to his family moments before the attack, apologizing for his intended actions and identifying himself as a “friendly federal assassin.” Investigators believe Allen was targeting officials within the Trump administration. His writings reportedly contained anti-Trump and anti-Christian rhetoric. The FBI has launched a criminal investigation into the incident, with the Secret Service also probing Allen’s background to understand the motivations behind the attack.
The security breach led to the immediate evacuation of President Trump, the First Lady, and Vice President J.D. Vance from the ballroom by Secret Service agents. Attendees were instructed to take cover. The annual dinner, a prominent event celebrating the press and its role in democracy, was subsequently canceled.
Ex-Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials have praised the swift actions of the agents on duty, stating that the security plan, despite the suspect’s attempts to bypass checkpoints, functioned as intended to protect the President and other dignitaries. They noted the complex security arrangements at large venues like the Washington Hilton, which involve multiple layers of protection and coordinated efforts among various law enforcement bodies.
Allen, described as a part-time teacher and former engineering student, had reportedly booked a hotel room at the Washington Hilton weeks in advance and traveled from California to Washington D.C. Investigators are examining his digital footprint, travel history, and personal life for further clues into his radicalization and planning. The incident has prompted a review of security arrangements at similar large-scale events and raised questions about how an individual with apparent intent to commit violence could get so close to such a high-profile gathering.
The event took place at the Washington Hilton Hotel, located in Washington, D.C. This venue has historical significance regarding presidential security, as it was also the site of an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
