Gurgaon Eateries Grapple with Soaring LPG Prices Amid Supply Disruptions

Restaurants and eateries in Gurgaon are facing significant operational challenges due to a sharp increase in commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices and ongoing supply disruptions. The escalating costs and erratic availability of LPG are forcing businesses to take drastic measures, including menu downsizing, price hikes, and exploring alternative cooking methods.

The Chenab Times has learned that the recent surge in commercial LPG prices, exacerbated by global geopolitical tensions, has placed immense pressure on the already thin profit margins of food establishments. Reports indicate that prices for 19 kg commercial LPG cylinders have seen substantial increases, with some instances of black market rates reaching as high as Rs 4,000, significantly above the official rate of approximately Rs 2,500 at the beginning of the crisis.

This price volatility is directly impacting the operational viability of restaurants. Many owners are reportedly buying cylinders at inflated prices in the black market to maintain operations, with some admitting to paying up to Rs 2,300 for a cylinder that officially costs Rs 1,800. This has led to a domino effect, compelling eateries to either increase menu prices or reduce their offerings. Some establishments have had to remove popular items from their menus, such as tawa roti and sizzlers, which require continuous flame usage, to manage LPG consumption.

The supply chain disruptions, partly linked to global energy market volatility and shipping route disruptions in West Asia, have further compounded the problem. Distributors have reportedly halted routine deliveries of commercial cylinders in some areas, forcing restaurants to rely on limited backup stocks, which typically last only two to three days. This uncertainty has also spurred a demand for electric cooking alternatives, with induction cooktops becoming scarce in the market.

Industry bodies and restaurant owners are calling for urgent government intervention to address the crisis. They are seeking relief from the escalating commercial LPG prices, improved supply chain coordination, and targeted support for smaller food businesses that are disproportionately affected. Without swift action, stakeholders warn of potential widespread restaurant closures and job losses, jeopardizing the sector’s recovery post-pandemic.

The impact is being felt across various segments of the food industry. Cloud kitchens and small eateries, which form a crucial part of the city’s food ecosystem, are particularly vulnerable. Owners of these establishments often operate on wafer-thin margins and are immediately hit by rising fuel costs. Some are already implementing temporary surcharges or increasing prices by Rs 5-20 on dishes to offset the increased expenses.

The situation highlights the delicate balance that the food service industry must maintain between operational costs and customer affordability. As global events continue to influence domestic energy prices, restaurants in Gurgaon, and indeed across India, are bracing for continued challenges in the coming weeks.
