Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama has urged the global Buddhist community to integrate the teachings of Gautama Buddha into their daily lives, extending greetings on the occasion of Vesak, also known as Buddha Purnima.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that on Friday, the Dalai Lama addressed followers worldwide during the sacred commemoration of Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana. He emphasized that despite the passage of 2,500 years and significant global changes, the core tenets of the Buddha’s message remain profoundly relevant to contemporary challenges.
Timeless Teachings for Modern Times
The Dalai Lama highlighted the principles of compassion, non-violence, and the understanding of dependent arising as enduring guides for navigating the complexities of the modern world. He articulated that the Buddha’s profound insight into dependent arising, coupled with his injunction to harm no one and assist all sentient beings, provides the most compassionate and pragmatic framework for existence in these troubled times.
In encouraging individuals to embrace the role of “21st-century Buddhists,” the spiritual leader called for a move beyond mere ritualistic observance. He advocated for an active engagement with the Buddha’s teachings through diligent study, deep reflection, and consistent practice. This process, he explained, involves attentive listening and reading, followed by profound contemplation of the acquired knowledge, leading to a thorough familiarity with the teachings.
Vesak: A Reminder of Inner Peace and Compassion
Marking the 2,570th Buddha Jayanti, the Dalai Lama noted that the occasion serves as a significant reminder of the spiritual illumination brought into the world by the Buddha. He expressed his sincere hope that individuals would draw inspiration from these teachings to cultivate a sense of inner peace within themselves and to extend compassion generously to others. The Dalai Lama concluded by offering prayers and well wishes to Buddhists across the globe on this auspicious day.
