Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s ‘Missing Link’ Inauguration Marred by Hours-Long Traffic Jams

The much-anticipated inauguration of the ‘Missing Link’ project on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on May 1 was significantly disrupted by massive traffic jams, leaving thousands of commuters stranded for several hours. The new 13.3-kilometre stretch, designed to bypass the congested ghat section, faced a chaotic debut amidst heavy holiday weekend traffic and the launch event itself.

Chaos on Maharashtra’s Busiest Highway

Commuters experienced gridlock for up to five to six hours on Thursday and Friday, with vehicle queues stretching for kilometres, particularly in the Lonavala ghat section. The congestion was exacerbated by the long holiday weekend, as numerous vehicles travelled towards Pune and Lonavala. Several vehicles reportedly broke down, further contributing to the standstill. Food malls and rest stops along the route saw heavy crowding as stranded passengers awaited traffic clearance. Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Supriya Sule was among those caught in the jam, reportedly being stuck for over two hours.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the traffic buildup on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was attributed to a combination of factors, including the surge in holiday travel for Maharashtra Day, Labour Day, and Buddha Purnima, coupled with adjustments required for vehicles beginning to use the newly opened stretch. Some reports suggest that minor vehicle breakdowns and lane disruptions also worsened the situation.

‘Missing Link’ Project Promises Improved Connectivity

The ‘Missing Link’ project, a significant infrastructure development by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), aims to improve connectivity between Mumbai and Pune. The 13.3-kilometre bypass features tunnels, viaducts, and a cable-stayed bridge, designed to avoid the accident-prone and congested ghat section of the expressway. This new alignment is expected to reduce the travel distance by approximately 6 kilometres and cut down travel time by 20 to 30 minutes, with potential for further savings at higher speeds of up to 100 km/hr.

The project, with an estimated cost of Rs 6,695.36 crore, includes twin tunnels measuring 1.75 km and 8.92 km, and a 645-meter cable-stayed bridge, touted as one of India’s tallest of its kind. It bypasses the challenging 19.8-kilometre ghat section, known for its sharp curves, steep inclines, and susceptibility to landslides, particularly during the monsoon season. The new route promises enhanced safety and efficiency for daily commuters, logistics operators, and tourists.

Criticism Over Planning and Execution

Despite the long-term benefits the ‘Missing Link’ project is expected to bring, its inauguration was met with criticism regarding planning and execution. Reports from The Indian Express indicated that the launch itself led to hours-long traffic jams as vehicles were held back for the inauguration ceremony. This caused considerable inconvenience to commuters who were already contending with holiday rush traffic.

In response to the severe congestion, some reports mentioned that authorities advised travellers to avoid the expressway for a few hours and suggested using the old Mumbai-Pune Highway as an alternative. Highway police initiated measures to ease the congestion, including temporary lane blocks, but faced difficulties in clearing the backlog due to the heavy volume of vehicles.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who inaugurated the project, acknowledged the issues and reportedly apologized to those inconvenienced. Ms. Sule urged the Maharashtra government to take immediate steps to improve traffic management in the ghat section, requesting the deployment of additional police personnel to manage the flow of vehicles more effectively.
