SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police has elevated two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs) to the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) in an administrative decision approved by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The promotions are effective immediately.
The Chenab Times has learned that the order, Government Order No. 265-Home of 2026 dated May 2, 2026, was issued by the Home Department, sanctioning the elevation of Mudasser Ahmed Tramboo and Vaseem Mehmood from their positions as DySPs (General Cadre) to SPs in Level-11 of the pay matrix. This new rank comes with a pay scale ranging from Rs 67,700 to Rs 2,08,700.
The promotions are provisional and are subject to the final outcome of any writ petitions that may be pending before the courts. This standard clause is often included in such administrative orders to account for any potential legal challenges or reviews that could affect the seniority or eligibility of the promoted officers.
The elevation of DySPs to the rank of SP is a routine administrative process within the Jammu and Kashmir Police department. These promotions are typically based on a combination of factors including seniority, performance reviews, and the availability of vacancies within the higher ranks. The move aims to strengthen the leadership at the Superintendent level, enabling more effective management and oversight of police operations across districts and specialized units within the Union Territory.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police, under the administrative control of the Union Territory’s Home Department, plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order, combating militancy, and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. Promotions to higher ranks are essential for the department’s operational efficiency and career progression pathways for its officers. The selection process for such promotions involves thorough scrutiny of service records and adherence to established recruitment and promotion rules.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who holds the portfolio of the Home Department, regularly reviews and approves significant administrative decisions concerning the police and civil services. His approval signifies the administration’s focus on strengthening the police force and ensuring that capable officers are placed in leadership positions. The promotion of officers like Mudasser Ahmed Tramboo and Vaseem Mehmood is seen as a recognition of their dedication and service to the police force.
The move also reflects the ongoing efforts to streamline the administrative hierarchy within the police department, ensuring clear lines of command and responsibility. As a Superintendent of Police, the officers will be entrusted with greater responsibilities, including overseeing law enforcement strategies, managing police stations, and leading investigations in their assigned areas. The specific postings for the newly promoted SPs are expected to be announced shortly by the relevant authorities within the Home Department.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police has been undergoing various reforms and modernization efforts aimed at enhancing its capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges. Such promotions are a vital component of these reforms, ensuring that the force remains well-equipped with experienced leadership at all levels. The inclusion of the condition regarding pending writ petitions underscores the adherence to due legal processes and ensures transparency in the promotion system.
