Adani Agri Fresh Limited (AAFL) has announced its expansion into the stone fruit market, commencing with the procurement of cherries in Himachal Pradesh for the upcoming season. This strategic move marks the company’s diversification beyond its established presence in apple sourcing.
Entry into Stone Fruit Category
The announcement was made during the ‘Fruit Horizon 2026’ conference, a two-day event organized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Department of Horticulture in Lucknow. Himachal Pradesh’s Horticulture Department, in collaboration with the state’s Stone Fruit Growers Association, had previously highlighted the significant export potential of fruits like cherries, plums, and apricots to Middle Eastern countries. This potential is attributed to an early harvest period in April and May, offering a competitive advantage in international markets.
Manish Agarwal, Business Head of AAFL, stated at the conference that the company’s initial focus will be on procuring cherries. Subsequently, the company intends to broaden its scope to include other stone fruits such as peaches and plums. This expansion is a natural progression, building upon AAFL’s extensive experience in apple sourcing and its ongoing commitment to enhancing market access for farmers.
Enhancing Farmer Livelihoods and Market Reach
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that this initiative is designed to improve the shelf life of fruits, expand market access for growers, and ensure more effective price discovery. By entering the stone fruit category, AAFL aims to provide a more comprehensive support system for fruit cultivators in the region.
Adani Agri Fresh Limited has been a prominent organized player in the apple procurement, storage, and marketing sector in Himachal Pradesh. Since commencing its operations in 2006 under the ‘Farm-Pik’ brand, the company has reported procuring over 3 lakh metric tons of apples from more than 17,000 farmers. These transactions have resulted in direct payouts amounting to approximately Rs 1,500 crore to the growers, demonstrating a substantial impact on the local agricultural economy.
To further support fruit growers, AAFL has developed a cumulative storage capacity of 25,000 metric tons in Himachal Pradesh. This infrastructure is crucial for extending the shelf life of fruits, thereby enabling wider market reach and reducing post-harvest losses. The company’s investment in cold storage facilities underscores its dedication to preserving the quality of produce and maximizing its value for the farmers.
Digital Mandi and Future Prospects
In its continuous effort to innovate and improve farmer engagement, AAFL is also expanding its digital mandi initiative. This platform facilitates remote selling of produce, allowing farmers to complete transactions without the necessity of visiting physical procurement centers. The digital mandi streamlines the selling process, offering convenience and greater efficiency to agricultural producers.
The ‘Fruit Horizon 2026’ conference served as a platform for stakeholders in the horticulture sector to discuss advancements, market trends, and strategies for growth. The participation of national agricultural research bodies and state horticulture departments highlights the collaborative approach being taken to strengthen India’s fruit industry. The focus on export-oriented crops like cherries, plums, and apricots indicates a growing ambition to tap into international markets, contributing to foreign exchange earnings and boosting the agricultural export sector.
AAFL’s entry into the stone fruit category is expected to bring its established expertise in supply chain management, quality control, and farmer outreach to a new segment of produce. The company’s prior success with apples suggests a well-developed model that can be adapted to the specific requirements of stone fruits. This diversification not only benefits Adani Agri Fresh Limited by expanding its business portfolio but also provides Himachal Pradesh’s stone fruit growers with a strong, organized market partner.
