Senior Sri Lankan Monk Arrested for Alleged Sexual Abuse of Minor

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A prominent Buddhist monk, identified as Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana, aged 71, has been arrested in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl, Sri Lankan police confirmed.

The Chenab Times has learned that the chief priest of a significant temple in Sri Lanka was taken into custody on Friday night. An arrest warrant had been issued by a magistrate’s court in the holy city of Anuradhapura against Hemarathana and the victim’s mother, who is accused of aiding and abetting the alleged abuse.

Police spokesperson FT Wootler stated that the victim is a 15-year-old girl who was reportedly abused on the premises of a temple in Anuradhapura. The initial complaint, registered in March, concerned the abduction and detention of a minor. However, subsequent investigations uncovered further details leading to the arrest.

Hemarathana was apprehended at the emergency unit of a private hospital in the capital city of Colombo, approximately 200 kilometers from Anuradhapura, where he was reportedly receiving medical treatment. Police have also confirmed the arrest of the victim’s mother.

Venerable Pallegama Hemarathana is a senior monk associated with Atamasthana, a group of sacred Buddhist shrines located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. This historical site attracts a large number of Buddhist pilgrims annually.

The alleged incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting swift action from law enforcement. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities committed to ensuring justice for the victim. Further details are expected to emerge as the legal process unfolds.
