Delhi Police Arrest Three in Racket Targeting iPhone Users, Recover 66 Stolen Phones

New Delhi: The Delhi Police have busted a mobile phone snatching and disposal racket that specifically targeted iPhone users, leading to the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of 66 stolen mobile phones. The operation highlights the increasing sophistication of criminal networks involved in high-value device theft.

Suspects Identified and Recovered Devices

The accused have been identified as Sameer (23), Suhail (23), and Zahir alias Salman (36). Authorities stated that the gang primarily focused on stealing iPhones, subsequently selling the stolen devices in grey markets through a network of receivers. The recovery includes a significant number of iPhones, underscoring the demand for these devices in illicit markets.

Investigation Triggered by Snatching Incident

The investigation was initiated following a snatching incident reported near IP Park in the Sarai Kale Khan area on April 18. In that incident, two motorcycle-borne assailants robbed a man of his iPhone 17 Pro. An First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Sunlight Colony police station, prompting the formation of a special police team tasked with cracking the case. The team employed a multi-pronged approach, analyzing CCTV footage, gathering local intelligence, and conducting technical surveillance.

Apprehension of Accused and Network Exposure

Through these investigative efforts, police successfully apprehended Sameer and Suhail. During their interrogation, the duo revealed that the stolen iPhone from the Sarai Kale Khan incident had been handed over to a receiver for further disposal. Acting on this information, law enforcement traced and apprehended Zahir alias Salman from the Chandni Mahal area in Old Delhi. A subsequent raid at his residence led to the recovery of 64 additional stolen mobile phones, bringing the total recovered to 66.

Modus Operandi and Grey Market Sales

Further details emerging from the investigation suggest that the gang targeted iPhone users due to the higher resale value of these devices. The stolen phones were then funneled into grey markets, where they were sold through a network of receivers. This practice is common in the disposal of stolen high-value electronics, as it allows criminals to profit while attempting to obscure the origin of the devices.

Broader Context of Mobile Theft in Delhi

This bust is part of a larger, ongoing effort by the Delhi Police to combat the pervasive issue of mobile phone theft and snatching in the National Capital Region. Recent operations have targeted various facets of this criminal activity, including gangs involved in altering IMEI numbers, dismantling devices for parts, and smuggling phones to neighboring countries like Nepal and Bangladesh. The recovery of a substantial number of stolen phones, including high-end iPhones, indicates a well-organized criminal syndicate operating within and potentially beyond Delhi.
