Illegal parking around Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is now under constant surveillance following the deployment of advanced hi-tech cameras. In the first 10 days of its operation, the automated enforcement system, a joint initiative between Delhi Traffic Police and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), has already led to the issuance of over 100 e-challans.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the technology-driven project commenced on May 3, utilising sophisticated Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. These cameras are designed to identify vehicles parked improperly on key airport roads and areas known for congestion near the airport, aiming to address a persistent problem that significantly impacts traffic flow and passenger experience.
The primary objective behind this initiative is to mitigate the long-standing issue of illegal parking that frequently causes traffic jams, inconveniences commuters, and raises safety concerns at one of India’s busiest airport hubs. The current setup includes 14 high-definition ANPR cameras strategically positioned across critical zones such as the Central Spine Road, approach roads to all terminals, the Cargo area, and the Rangpuri–Centaure Junction stretch.
Of the installed cameras, 10 are specifically dedicated to detecting vehicles that are illegally parked on the airport’s approach roads. This deployment covers an estimated 15 percent of the airport’s entire road network, initiating a focused effort to bring order to a frequently problematic area.
The automated system works by capturing the registration numbers of vehicles found to be in violation of parking regulations. This data is then transmitted and integrated with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Delhi Traffic Police databases for verification. Following successful verification, e-challans are automatically generated and issued to the offenders in accordance with applicable traffic laws.
Authorities have highlighted that improperly parked vehicles are a significant contributor to severe congestion on essential airport roads. They not only obstruct the movement of emergency services but also escalate the risk of accidents and pose substantial security threats within the sensitive airport environment.
The surveillance network is slated for further expansion, with plans to integrate over 50 additional ANPR cameras into the existing system. Once fully operational, this expanded network is expected to significantly enhance the monitoring and enforcement capabilities across all roads connecting the three terminals of the IGI Airport, thereby improving overall traffic management and security.
Beyond addressing illegal parking, the ANPR system is also capable of detecting other traffic violations, including over-speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road. Future phases of this enforcement mechanism are set to encompass further offences such as jumping red lights, violating stop-line rules, carrying triple riders on two-wheelers, and riding without helmets.
Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of DIAL, commented on the initiative, stating, “Improper parking around airport approach roads has been a persistent concern impacting traffic flow, passenger convenience and overall security. Through this joint initiative with Delhi Traffic Police, we are leveraging advanced technology to bring greater traffic discipline and ensure smoother vehicular movement around Delhi Airport.”
Reinforcing these sentiments, DCP Traffic Shobhit Saxena noted that the new automated enforcement system is anticipated to serve as a potent deterrent for repeat offenders. He added, “Such violations not only lead to congestion and inconvenience for commuters but also create safety hazards and potential security concerns in a highly sensitive zone. Offences are now being captured and processed electronically with greater accuracy and efficiency.” Saxena urged all commuters to strictly adhere to traffic regulations when navigating the airport vicinity.
