The Delhi Congress on Saturday organized widespread protests throughout the national capital, voicing strong opposition to the recent surge in prices of essential commodities, including fuel and milk. The demonstrations followed a day after the central government increased the prices of petrol and diesel by ₹3 per litre.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the protests were coordinated by all 258 Block Congress Committees (BCCs) and took place outside numerous petrol pumps and dairy outlets across Delhi. Party workers carried placards and chanted slogans criticizing the current government’s economic policies, which they claim have led to escalating inflation.
A statement issued by the Delhi Congress on the social media platform X asserted that the “failed policies of the Modi government have set petrol, diesel, and milk prices on fire.” The party workers expressed that the rising costs of fuel and daily necessities are placing a significant burden on ordinary citizens and exacerbating inflationary pressures.
Protesters in the Chandni Chowk district, for instance, held up signs bearing messages such as “Expensive diesel, expensive oil, the Modi government has failed” and “Costly diesel and oil have left the public distressed.” These actions underscored the widespread discontent among the populace regarding the economic situation.
Devender Yadav, the Delhi Congress president, participated in a protest held near dairy booths in the Bhalswa area. He called for an immediate rollback of the recently announced price increases, emphasizing the need for government intervention to alleviate public hardship.
Congress members further alleged that the price hikes were strategically implemented by the BJP-led central government shortly after the conclusion of Assembly elections. They contended that this timing has added to the existing financial difficulties faced by many households.
“As soon as the elections ended, the BJP-led government has delivered a severe shock to common people by increasing the prices of petrol, diesel and milk,” one Congress worker stated, reflecting the sentiment of many participants. The party has consistently criticized the government’s economic management, particularly concerning inflation and the cost of living.
The increase in petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre on Friday marked the first such upward revision in over four years. This adjustment is occurring amidst a broader trend of rising fuel costs, partly influenced by geopolitical events such as the conflict in Iran.
Following the price adjustment, petrol in New Delhi is now being sold at ₹97.77 per litre, an increase from the previous rate of ₹94.77. Similarly, diesel prices have risen to ₹90.67 per litre from ₹87.67, according to sources familiar with the pricing mechanisms. These figures highlight the tangible impact of the price hike on consumers, affecting transportation costs and the prices of goods that rely on fuel for delivery.
The protests by the Delhi Congress highlight the ongoing political and public discourse surrounding inflation and the economic policies of the central government. The party aims to leverage public dissatisfaction to exert pressure on the government to reconsider its pricing strategies for essential commodities.
