US Secretary of State Invites Prime Minister Modi for White House Visit

NEW DELHI, May 23: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended an invitation on behalf of President Donald Trump for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the White House in the near future, a development announced by the U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, on the social media platform X.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that during the meeting, Secretary Rubio provided the Prime Minister with an update on the progress of bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including defence, strategic technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education, and people-to-people ties. Secretary Rubio also shared the American perspective on a range of regional and global issues, notably the situation in West Asia.

Prime Minister Modi affirmed India’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and underscored the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy. He also conveyed his warm greetings to President Trump and expressed anticipation for continued engagements with him.

Earlier in the day, Secretary Rubio arrived in Kolkata for a four-day diplomatic visit to India, scheduled from May 23 to May 26. This visit marks the first time a U.S. Secretary of State has visited Kolkata in 14 years, with the previous visit by Hillary Clinton occurring in 2012. According to reports, Rubio’s itinerary includes visits to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi, with a primary focus on discussions related to trade, technology, defence, energy cooperation, and the Quad partnership.

Prior to his departure for India, Secretary Rubio described India as a significant partner, stating the U.S. ‘wanted to sell India as much energy as it could buy.’ A Quad meeting is slated for May 26, anticipated to be attended by Secretary Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu, and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
