MLA Mehraj Din Malik and DC Krishan Lal Review GIS-Based Master Plan for Doda

Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir is set to adopt advanced GIS technology for its urban master plan aimed at ensuring planned, sustainable, and disaster-resilient development.

The comprehensive review meeting focused on scientific urban expansion, infrastructure improvement, and environmental protection to meet the future needs of the growing district.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, MLA Mehraj Din Malik and Deputy Commissioner Krishan Lal chaired the meeting to examine the GIS-Based Master Plan for Doda district.

MLA Mehraj Din Malik emphasised the need for proper municipal boundary demarcation, protection of sinking zones in Doda city, and improved waste disposal systems. He called for uninterrupted power supply to schools, development of open gyms and parks, and large-scale plantation drives with a special focus on fruit-bearing plants. Malik also stressed the importance of inclusive public participation and disaster-resilient planning to achieve balanced and environmentally sustainable development in the Chenab Valley region.

Deputy Commissioner Krishan Lal highlighted the significance of technology-driven and scientific planning for systematic urban growth, better civic amenities, transparent governance, and efficient resource management. He directed all concerned departments to furnish updated maps, records, and field data to ensure the timely preparation of an accurate and people-centric master plan.

Discussions during the meeting covered several critical areas, including land use mapping, road connectivity, disaster management strategies, drainage systems, preservation of green zones, tourism promotion, beautification projects, traffic management, and regulation of construction activities through modern GIS technology. Officials examined how these elements could integrate into a cohesive framework for long-term development.

The Deputy Commissioner reiterated the district administration’s commitment to strengthening water supply infrastructure, environmental protection, and coordinated planning. He underscored that the master plan would address both current requirements and anticipated future demands of the population in Doda.

This initiative reflects broader efforts in Jammu and Kashmir to leverage modern tools for urban planning in hilly and ecologically sensitive districts. Doda, located in the Chenab region, faces unique challenges including difficult terrain, vulnerability to natural disasters, and rapid population growth. A GIS-based approach is expected to enable precise mapping and data-driven decision-making for infrastructure projects.

The meeting also touched upon promoting tourism while maintaining ecological balance, an important aspect for the region known for its natural beauty and potential as a tourist destination. Participants discussed regulating construction to prevent unplanned growth that could strain existing resources or increase disaster risks.

By prioritising sustainable practices such as green spaces and fruit-bearing plantations, the plan aims to enhance both environmental health and local livelihoods. Public participation is expected to play a key role in finalising the master plan, ensuring that development aligns with the aspirations of residents.

The review comes at a time when Doda, like many districts in Jammu and Kashmir, is witnessing increased focus on infrastructure upgrades and good governance. Officials believe the GIS-based master plan will serve as a model for scientific urban development across similar areas in the Union Territory.
