Punjab and Haryana Overcome Rain Deficit as Wet Spell Continues

Northwest India, including Punjab and Haryana, has experienced a significant shift in weather patterns with widespread rainfall over the past 24 hours, effectively erasing a substantial rain deficit for May. This meteorological turnaround ensures a continued wet spell across the region, with forecasts predicting intermittent showers until June 6.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Punjab, which had recorded rainfall 37 per cent below its Long Period Average (LPA) until May 29, has now seen its May rainfall surplus by 25 per cent. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a bulletin on May 31, forecasting a continuous wet spell over Punjab and Haryana with isolated to scattered rains likely until June 6. This forecast follows a brief anticipated dry period from June 2 to June 4.

The recent downpours have brought light to moderate rainfall to most parts of Punjab and Haryana, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in isolated areas. Several locations have recorded rainfall significantly above their normal levels for this time of year.

From March 1 to May 31, Punjab recorded 21.6 mm of rainfall, exceeding the LPA of 17.3 mm for the corresponding period. Seasonally, from March 1 onwards, the state’s rainfall is reported to be 22 per cent above the LPA.

Among the districts in Punjab, Nawanshahar received the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours, measuring 33.7 mm. Ludhiana followed with 25.7 mm, and Gurdaspur recorded 22.6 mm. Other districts, including Fatehgarh Sahib, Jalandhar, Patiala, and Ropar, registered more than 10 mm of rain. Moga was the sole district that did not receive rain during this period.

Despite the recent widespread showers, seven districts in Punjab—Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Mansa, and Muktsar—continue to experience rainfall below their LPA for the season. The shortfall in these districts ranges from nine per cent to as high as 61 per cent.

In Haryana, Panchkula was the wettest district over the past 24 hours, recording 10.6 mm of rainfall. Kurukshetra received 10.3 mm, and Karnal registered 10.1 mm. Palwal and Charkhi Dadri reported no rainfall during the same period.

For the month of May, Haryana received 20.8 mm of rain, which is just two per cent above its LPA of 20.4 mm. Seasonally, from March 1 onwards, the state has recorded 52.6 mm of rain against an LPA of 45 mm, indicating a surplus of 17 per cent.

However, eight districts in Haryana—Yamunanagar, Sonipat, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, Faridabad, and Ambala—have received rainfall below their LPA for the entire season. The extent of this deficit was not detailed in the available information.

The prevailing weather conditions have also led to a significant drop in temperatures across both states. The highest maximum temperature recorded in Punjab over the past 24 hours was 34.5 degrees Celsius in Bathinda. Similarly, Bathinda also recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 18 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Hisar registered the highest maximum temperature at 36.9 degrees Celsius, while Ambala recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 18 degrees Celsius.
