Uttar Pradesh Man Declared Dead in Revenue Records; Probe Ordered

A disconcerting administrative lapse has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district, where a living individual was officially recorded as deceased, prompting authorities to initiate corrective measures and an investigation.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the matter came to light during a ‘Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas’ session held at the Bilthara Road tehsil on Saturday. The event was presided over by District Magistrate Mangla Prasad Singh and Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sharad Chaudhary elaborated that Chandrashekhar, a resident of Katya village, lodged a formal complaint detailing how he was erroneously listed as deceased in the land revenue records, known as ‘khatauni’.

Upon receiving the complaint, the District Magistrate reportedly expressed displeasure with the responsible revenue official and issued a directive for the immediate rectification of the land records. The official also issued a stern warning of stringent action against any party failing to comply with the order.

The SDM further explained that an inquiry conducted by the administration revealed that Chandrashekhar had two brothers, Shyam Sundar and Rajendra. Rajendra had passed away in the year 2018.

Investigations indicated that due to the negligence of the revenue staff, Chandrashekhar was incorrectly marked as deceased in the revenue records in 2021, mistakenly identifying him as the deceased sibling instead of Rajendra. The administrative error has caused significant distress and potential complications for Chandrashekhar.

Steps are currently being undertaken to amend the official records, and the necessary corrections are expected to be completed in the near future. The SDM confirmed that the revenue employee implicated in this oversight is already under suspension due to their involvement in a separate case, suggesting a pattern of administrative issues within the department.

This incident highlights the critical importance of accuracy and diligence in maintaining land revenue records, which have profound implications for land ownership, inheritance, and various government welfare schemes. Such errors can lead to prolonged legal battles, financial hardship, and a loss of faith in administrative processes for affected citizens.

The ‘Sampoorna Samadhan Diwas’ initiative is designed to address public grievances and ensure timely resolution of issues related to governance and administration across the state. However, the occurrence of such a fundamental error in record-keeping underscores the need for enhanced supervision and accountability within the revenue department. The administration’s prompt action in ordering a probe and initiating corrections is a crucial step towards restoring public trust.

The investigation aims to ascertain the exact cause of the clerical error and identify all individuals responsible, ensuring that such oversights are not repeated. While the immediate focus is on correcting Chandrashekhar’s status, a thorough review of other land records may also be initiated to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The District Magistrate’s directive for strict action signifies the administration’s commitment to accountability. Such incidents, though isolated, can have far-reaching consequences for individuals and families whose livelihoods are tied to land ownership and official documentation. The rectification process will involve updating the ‘khatauni’ to reflect Chandrashekhar as living and ensuring his details are accurate in all subsequent land-related documents.
