A 25-year-old man’s life was saved in Uttar Pradesh after Meerut Police responded within eight minutes to a suicide alert triggered by an Instagram post, leading to his hospitalization.
The swift intervention highlights the operational coordination mechanism between the Uttar Pradesh Police and Meta, which monitors social media for posts indicating potential self-harm and relays alerts to authorities.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the incident unfolded on June 7 when the youth, a resident of the Sardhana area in Meerut, uploaded a video on Instagram. In the video, the individual appeared to be consuming a white liquid, accompanied by a caption that read, “Ab tum khush rehna apni life mein” (Now you stay happy in your life).
Meta’s Social Media Centre at the police headquarters received a suicide alert concerning the post at 6:53 pm. Acting upon the directives from the Director General of Police, the centre promptly alerted the Meerut Police, providing them with the available mobile number and location details associated with the account.
Under the guidance of the Senior Superintendent of Police, personnel from the Sardhana police station were dispatched to the youth’s residence. Upon arrival, they discovered the individual in a critical state. A bottle containing a suspected liquid substance was found near him.
Emergency responders, with the assistance of the youth’s family members, quickly transported him to a nearby hospital. Medical treatment was administered, and his condition subsequently improved.
During initial questioning, the young man attributed his attempted suicide to stress and depression stemming from the dissolution of a relationship. Authorities provided counseling to both the individual and his family, offering necessary support and guidance.
The Uttar Pradesh Police confirmed that the coordination mechanism with Meta, which has been active since 2022, facilitates the sharing of information regarding suicide-related posts on Facebook and Instagram. This allows for immediate intervention by law enforcement agencies.
Since January 1, 2023, up to May 31, 2026, the police reported that interventions based on such alerts have successfully saved the lives of 3,011 individuals across Uttar Pradesh. This figure underscores the efficacy of the collaborative efforts between social media platforms and police departments in addressing mental health crises.
