Gurugram police is set to implement a significant reshuffle across its four cyber police stations in a bid to bolster efforts against the escalating cybercrime menace. The move aims to strengthen operational capabilities, enhance technical infrastructure, and ensure more efficient case disposal and recovery of financial losses.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Gurugram Police Commissioner Sibash Kabiraj announced sweeping changes, extending beyond personnel adjustments, to tackle the growing number of cybercrime incidents. The city has witnessed a substantial rise in cyber fraud complaints, with the police department receiving over 40,000 such reports annually. These cases encompass a wide range of fraudulent activities, including part-time job scams, digital arrests, sextortion, credit card fraud, malicious APK file distribution, and operations by fake call centres targeting both domestic and international victims.
Despite the surge in complaints, police data suggests a decline in overall financial losses last year, attributed to swift police intervention and the proactive freezing of bank accounts involved in fraudulent transactions. Gurugram currently operates four dedicated cyber police stations—East, West, South, and Manesar—staffed by over 220 police personnel supervised by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).
Statistics reveal that 41,395 cyber fraud complaints were lodged in 2025. As of May 31 this year, more than 17,000 complaints have already been registered, leading to the filing of 660 First Information Reports (FIRs). Law enforcement agencies have apprehended over 100 cybercriminals in the current year. In the preceding year, a total of 41,395 cyber fraud complaints were reported, resulting in the arrest of more than 1,800 individuals implicated in cyber fraud activities.
Speaking about the challenges, Kabiraj stated, “Cybercrime is one of the biggest challenges today. First, we are reshuffling the manpower in all four cyber police stations. Cyber police stations are being strengthened with trained manpower, enhancing technical capabilities and providing specialised training to investigating officers. Our focus will be on the disposal of cases and recovery. Greater coordination with banks, telecom companies and national agencies will be ensured.”
The planned revamp includes equipping officers with advanced technical tools and specialized investigative training to improve their effectiveness in dealing with complex cybercrimes. The emphasis will be on streamlining the investigation process, ensuring quicker resolution of cases, and enhancing the recovery rate of assets and funds lost to cyber fraud. The Gurugram police are also looking to foster stronger collaborative ties with financial institutions, telecommunication providers, and national cybersecurity agencies to create a more robust and integrated response mechanism against cyber offenders.
This initiative signifies the administration’s commitment to addressing the pervasive threat of cybercrime, which poses a significant risk to individuals and businesses alike. By strengthening the capacity of its cyber police stations, Gurugram aims to create a safer digital environment for its citizens and deter future criminal activities in the online space. The impending reshuffle is expected to infuse new energy and expertise into the cybercrime investigation units, improving their overall efficiency and public service delivery.
