Cardiology services at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College (RPGMC) in Tanda, Himachal Pradesh, are set to resume normal operations following the arrival of three new cardiology specialists. The department had been facing disruptions due to a shortage of medical professionals, impacting patient care and consultation availability.
The Chenab Times has learned that Principal Dr Milap Sharma announced the return to normalcy, stating that the induction of three cardiologists will significantly enhance patient management and restore the full functionality of the Cardiology Department. The shortage had previously led to considerable inconvenience for patients seeking essential cardiac consultations, investigations, and treatments.
Dr Soni Kumar and Dr LN Lakhan recently joined the institution, while senior cardiologist Dr Naresh Rana, who had previously been transferred from Tanda, has also returned to the Out-Patient Department (OPD) to attend to patients. The newly appointed specialists have begun reviewing the department’s operations and have engaged with both medical staff and patients.
This development occurs amidst an ongoing separate medical inquiry into alleged irregularities concerning the use and implantation of cardiac stents and balloons within the department. A team comprising senior doctors has been tasked with scrutinizing various aspects of the department’s functioning in response to complaints and concerns raised about specific medical procedures.
The reinstatement of specialist cardiology services is anticipated to offer substantial relief to hundreds of cardiac patients who travel to the medical college and hospital from Kangra and surrounding districts. These districts include Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Lahaul-Spiti. The institution is recognized as one of the few government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh equipped with a cardiac catheterisation laboratory (Cath Lab), positioning it as a crucial referral centre for advanced cardiac care within the state.
In recent weeks, reports indicated that a team of senior doctors had reportedly seized cardiac stents and balloons valued at approximately one crore rupees. These medical supplies were allegedly stored without proper authorization in a cupboard within the department. The Himachal Pradesh Government has been informed of this matter for further investigation. This inspection was initiated following directives from the state government, prompted by concerns over alleged discrepancies in the Cardiology Department’s operational procedures.
Hospital administrators have conveyed assurances to patients that comprehensive measures are being implemented to reinforce departmental services and uphold transparency. They have emphasized that the provision of cardiac care will remain uninterrupted during this period.
