Kannur, Kerala: Authorities in Kerala have initiated an investigation into a bomb threat that caused disruption at Kannur International Airport, officials confirmed Sunday. The threat, which was later determined to be a hoax, led to security checks and a temporary diversion of resources.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Mattannur Police have registered a case and commenced a probe into the incident. The airport and two airline operators received an email on Saturday afternoon detailing intentions to destroy the airport with a bomb blast and claiming explosives had been planted.
In response to the alarming email, airport security personnel conducted a thorough search of the premises and the aircraft identified in the communication. Following a comprehensive inspection, the threat was officially declared a hoax, alleviating immediate security concerns.
The case was formally registered based on a complaint lodged by the airport’s assistant manager. The complaint cites various provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Information Technology Act, and the Kerala Police Act, underscoring the legal framework being applied to the incident. Police are now actively working to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for sending the fraudulent threat.
Efforts to trace the origin of the email are underway, with law enforcement agencies seeking assistance from Google. As the threat was dispatched from a Gmail account, cooperation with the tech giant is considered crucial in identifying the sender. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by aviation infrastructure in managing and mitigating the impact of such malicious communications.
The investigation is expected to focus on digital forensics to trace the IP addresses and other identifying markers associated with the email account. Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all passengers and staff at Kannur International Airport and are employing all available resources to resolve the case.
