A loud explosion-like sound late Saturday night near the Majitha road police station in Amritsar caused widespread panic and speculation of a grenade attack. The incident, which occurred around 11:45 pm, alarmed residents, hospital attendees, and passers-by, fueling rumours of a militant targeting the station.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the sound led to immediate concern, with many contacting relatives and acquaintances. Media personnel also converged on the scene as the news spread. The Station House Officer (SHO), Rakesh Kumar, who was engaged in vehicle checking nearby, rushed to the police station with personnel upon hearing the noise.
Following a thorough investigation of the premises, the police determined that the alarming sound was not the result of an explosive device but rather the bursting of the front tyre and tube of an old police response vehicle (PCR motorcycle) parked within the station grounds. SHO Rakesh Kumar confirmed that no explosive materials were involved and described the incident as purely accidental.
The scare highlights the heightened security sensitivities in the region. While the immediate cause was benign, the initial assumption of a militant attack underscores the prevailing atmosphere and the potential for minor incidents to escalate into widespread concern due to existing security apprehensions.
The Majitha road police station is a key law enforcement hub in Amritsar, responsible for maintaining order and responding to incidents in its jurisdiction. The presence of a PCR motorcycle parked within the station premises is standard operational procedure, with these vehicles being crucial for rapid response and patrolling duties.
In the aftermath of the incident, the police have advised the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to report any suspicious activities through official channels. The quick clarification by the SHO helped in alleviating the fear that had gripped the area, preventing any further unnecessary alarm.
While the incident was resolved without any actual threat, it serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required by law enforcement agencies and the public in maintaining peace and security. The rapid response and thorough investigation by the police team demonstrated their commitment to ensuring the safety of the community, even in situations that turn out to be based on misinterpretations.
The Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, located in close proximity to the police station, experienced some disruption as patients’ relatives and hospital staff became aware of the commotion. The proximity of the hospital to the police station meant that any perceived threat near the station could directly impact the sense of security for those present at the medical facility.
Local authorities have indicated that while this specific incident was accidental, they remain committed to investigating all potential threats to public safety with the utmost seriousness. The promptness with which the situation was assessed and clarified played a crucial role in restoring normalcy and preventing the spread of misinformation.
Amritsar, a city of significant historical and religious importance, experiences a regular influx of tourists and pilgrims. Maintaining a secure environment is therefore a priority for the local administration and police department, ensuring that both residents and visitors feel safe.
