Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reiterated that the government’s plan to advocate for the restoration of statehood remains steadfast. He announced that leaders and legislators of the National Conference (NC) will travel to New Delhi during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament to remind the Union government of its commitment to this cause. Abdullah stated that the promise of restoring statehood, made before the Supreme Court, Parliament, and in public forums, must be honored.
Protest Plan Confirmed
The Chief Minister informed reporters that the intention to proceed with a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the first day of the Monsoon Session is unchanged. This action is intended to amplify the voice of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and to press for the fulfillment of assurances regarding statehood.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Abdullah recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which several critical issues were discussed. These included the restoration of statehood, the financial condition of Jammu and Kashmir, and measures to accelerate development projects.
Discussions with Prime Minister
Abdullah expressed optimism that the discussions with the Prime Minister would yield positive outcomes for the region’s populace, particularly concerning economic stability and infrastructure development. The Chief Minister emphasized that the demand for statehood is not merely a political objective but a reflection of widespread public sentiment and crucial for effective governance and accountability.
Reservation Policy and Other Issues
Regarding the long-pending demand for reservation, Abdullah explained that a Cabinet sub-committee’s report had been approved and forwarded to the Lieutenant Governor, who subsequently referred it to the Centre. The central government had sought clarifications, and the department has prepared the necessary responses. A Cabinet meeting will be convened shortly to approve these replies before they are sent back to the Centre.
In addition to political and developmental concerns, Abdullah also touched upon preparations for the upcoming Muharram observances, noting that the administration has been reviewing arrangements for over a month to ensure a smooth and peaceful period. He also extended a welcome to pilgrims for the Amarnath Yatra, expressing hopes for a safe and successful pilgrimage.
The Chief Minister highlighted a recent administrative achievement with the appointment of 132 junior engineers in the Public Works Department (PWD), stating that this would positively impact ground-level development initiatives.
