Shimla police have apprehended a drug supplier from Punjab, seizing a significant quantity of heroin and cash as part of an ongoing crackdown on illicit drug trafficking networks. The operation led to the arrest of an individual identified as Harpreet, alias Harry, who was supplying narcotics in Himachal Pradesh.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the arrest followed an earlier seizure of heroin from another individual in Shimla, which triggered an investigation into the broader supply chain. This led to the tracing and apprehension of the Punjab-based supplier.
Drug Supply Chain Interrupted
The breakthrough came after Shimla police arrested one Rahul Thakur on June 10 with 7 grams of heroin and Rs 23,000 in cash within Shimla. A case was registered against Thakur under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, initiating a detailed investigation into his sources and network.
According to Shimla Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh, the investigation involved a thorough examination of digital evidence, including WhatsApp communications and financial transactions. This meticulous analysis aimed to uncover backward linkages in the drug supply chain. The investigation revealed that Harpreet, operating from Kharar in Punjab, was a key source of the contraband being supplied.
Raid and Seizure in Kharar
Based on the evidence gathered, a police team was dispatched to Punjab to apprehend Harpreet. The team conducted a raid on his residence in Kharar, where approximately 309 grams of heroin were seized along with Rs 61,900 in cash. The accused was subsequently brought to Shimla for further legal proceedings.
The Superintendent of Police detailed Harpreet’s modus operandi, explaining that the supplier exclusively used WhatsApp for communication related to drug trafficking. To circumvent law enforcement, Harpreet reportedly had drug money deposited into the bank accounts of his family members, friends, and associates. He would then withdraw these funds, keeping the cash in his possession.
Broader Investigation Underway
The total seizure in connection with this case now stands at approximately 316 grams of heroin, with an estimated market value of Rs 25 lakh. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the potential involvement of other individuals in the drug racket.
The Shimla police have indicated that more arrests are expected as the investigation progresses and the full scope of the network is uncovered. The police are working to dismantle the entire operation that supplies illegal drugs to the region.
