The Delhi Traffic Police have released a comprehensive traffic advisory detailing road closures, diversions, and alternate routes to manage the anticipated vehicular and pedestrian movement during the annual Kanwar Yatra. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to minimize disruptions.
As the annual Kanwar Yatra commences, the Delhi Traffic Police have issued a traffic advisory to manage the influx of devotees and ensure the smooth flow of both pilgrim and general traffic across the city, with significant road diversions and restrictions in place.
The Chenab Times has learned that the advisory, released ahead of the yatra which runs from July 30 to August 11, aims to regulate traffic on major routes, particularly in the Northern Range, to facilitate the passage of Kanwariyas carrying holy Ganga Jal to various Shiva temples in Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
The Delhi Traffic Police have identified several key roads that will be affected, including National Highway 44 (GT Karnal Road) from Singhu Border to Mukarba Chowk, Mahatma Gandhi Marg (Outer Ring Road) from Kingsway Camp to Netaji Subhash Place, and Head Gujjar Marg (Outer Ring Road) from Bhalswa Dairy to Madhuban Chowk. Additionally, service roads along NH-44 and the Outer Ring Road will experience regulated movement. The advisory emphasizes that no parking will be permitted on notified Kanwar routes.
To mitigate congestion, commuters have been urged to utilize alternate routes such as the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), Narela-Bawana Road, Burari Road, and Azadpur Chowk. However, the movement of Kanwariyas and their accompanying vehicles is strictly prohibited on the UER-II Expressway for safety reasons. Heavy Transport Vehicles (HTVs), with the exception of city buses, will face restrictions or diversions on various routes from July 29 to August 12. These routes include GT Road between Apsara Border and Yamuna Bridge, Wazirabad Road from Bhopura Border to Signature Bridge, Vikas Marg, Asha Ram Tyagi Marg (Road No. 66), Pusta Road, and Loni Road. Diverted heavy vehicles will be routed through designated corridors like NH-9 and NH-44.
A significant closure will be implemented on GT Road, specifically the stretch from Apsara Border to Yamuna Bridge, which will be closed for general traffic from 7 am on August 9 until 8 pm on August 12, coinciding with the peak movement of Kanwariyas. The movement of pilgrims and their vehicles will also not be permitted on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, with pilgrims directed to follow traditional routes.
Tentative routes for Kanwariyas have been outlined, including passages through Singhu Border, Ramdev Chowk (Narela), Old Bawana, Narela Road, Hanuman Mandir, and Bawana Canal. Other routes involve the Singhu Border Service Road (NH-44), Khampur, Bakoli, Palla, Mukarba Chowk, and Khatu Shyam Mandir. Pilgrims entering from Singhu Border may also use Alipur, Swaroop Nagar, Nangli Poona, and Mukarba Chowk. Additionally, routes via Wazirabad and the service road on the Outer Ring Road, leading to Bhalswa Dairy and Mukarba Chowk, have been indicated.
The advisory also highlights that certain routes in Central Delhi will likely be regulated. These include Boulevard Road from Yudhister Setu to Barafkhana Chowk, Rani Jhansi Road from Barafkhana Chowk to Azad Market Chowk, Veer Banda Bairagi Marg from Azad Market Chowk to Zhakira Underpass, Rani Jhansi Flyover from St Stephen’s Hospital to R/A Idgah, and Faiz Road from R/A Idgah to R/A Bagga.
To ensure the safety and security of the devotees, more than 1,500 police personnel have been deployed across the city. Enhanced CCTV surveillance is in place, and inter-state coordination has been established for the smooth conduct of the 13-day pilgrimage. Motorcycle patrols, Quick Response Teams, ambulances, and PCR vans are strategically positioned to respond to emergencies. Assistance camps have also been set up along the Kanwar routes to provide immediate help.
Commuters are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow for extra travel time, and adhere to the directions issued by traffic personnel on the ground. Passengers traveling to New Delhi Railway Station have been advised to use the Paharganj side entrance to avoid potential crowding at the Ajmeri Gate entrance during the yatra period. The Delhi Traffic Police has also appealed to the public to stay updated through their official social media platforms for real-time traffic information.
