Ongole Government General Hospital (GGH) has successfully treated a rare neurological condition, Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), for a patient free of charge, thereby saving him from a potential medical bill of up to ₹6 lakh. The successful treatment highlights the advanced medical capabilities available in government healthcare institutions.
Patient’s Condition and Diagnosis
The patient, identified as Nageswar Reddy, a 29-year-old cathlab technician, presented with a loss of function in his hands and significant difficulty in walking. Upon noticing these alarming symptoms, he was brought to the Ongole GGH. Dr. Hari, a neurology specialist at the hospital, conducted an initial examination, including a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS), and initiated early-stage treatment. As the patient’s condition progressed to include leg weakness and an unsteady gait, a more comprehensive evaluation was performed, leading to a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Rare Neurological Disorder
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare and serious autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nervous system. This can lead to muscle weakness, tingling sensations, and in severe cases, paralysis. The syndrome can affect breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly. The typical treatment involves Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, which is administered over five days. For a person weighing approximately 60 kg, the required dosage translates to a significant cost, often ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹6 lakh in private hospitals for a full course.
Treatment and Recovery at Ongole GGH
At Ongole GGH, Dr. Hari and his team administered the critical IVIG treatment to Nageswar Reddy. Following the completion of the specialized treatment, the patient experienced a gradual recovery and has now returned to leading a normal and healthy life. The successful outcome underscores the effectiveness of the medical interventions provided at the government hospital.
Commendation for Government Healthcare Services
The in-charge superintendent of Ongole GGH, Kiran Kumar, commended the neurology medical team, led by Dr. Hari, for their diligent efforts. He emphasized that this case serves as a testament to the capability of government hospitals in providing high-quality medical services comparable to corporate hospitals, at no cost to the patient. Kumar also took the opportunity to advise the public to seek immediate medical consultation upon noticing symptoms such as sudden weakness in the hands or legs, difficulty in walking, or an inability to hold objects, stressing the importance of early detection and intervention.
The state government’s inclusion of expensive GBS therapies under the Ayushman Bharat–Arogya Karnataka scheme further aims to make such critical treatments accessible to a larger population. This initiative, coupled with the exemplary care provided by institutions like Ongole GGH, reinforces the commitment to ensuring equitable healthcare access across the state.
