Srinagar, June 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) has appealed to the administration to expedite the announcement of summer vacations for educational institutions, citing the prevailing intense heatwave across the Union Territory. The forum emphasized the need for proactive decision-making to safeguard the health and well-being of students.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the JKCSF Chairman, Abdul Qayoom Wani, expressed disappointment over the perceived delay in issuing the vacation schedule, suggesting that such decisions should not be contingent on public pressure. He highlighted that matters concerning the welfare of children, especially students, necessitate prompt action driven by scientific advice and humanitarian concerns rather than public outcry.
Wani stated that departments such as Education and Health are critically sensitive due to their direct impact on human life, societal progress, and the future of the youth. He stressed that these sectors must remain impartial to political considerations, with all decisions affecting students consistently prioritizing their health and overall welfare. The prevailing weather conditions, characterized by a significant heatwave, have heightened the urgency of this matter.
The JKCSF Chairman urged the government to conduct an immediate review of the current weather situation and to announce summer vacations without delay if deemed necessary in the broader public interest. He underscored that protecting children from extreme weather conditions is a shared responsibility and advocated for a governance approach that demonstrates sensitivity, foresight, and compassion.
Reiterating the forum’s long-standing appeal to maintain education as a sphere separate from political maneuvering, Wani implored policymakers to adopt a child-centric approach. This approach, he argued, should be the guiding principle for all decisions pertaining to students, particularly during periods of adverse weather phenomena.
The forum’s statement comes as students and parents in Jammu and Kashmir face challenging weather conditions, with temperatures soaring across various regions. The timely announcement of vacations is seen as crucial for providing relief to students and ensuring their safety from heat-related ailments. The civil society’s intervention highlights a growing concern among various stakeholders regarding the administration’s responsiveness to issues directly affecting the populace, especially vulnerable sections like children.
JKCSF has consistently advocated for a transparent and student-focused education policy, emphasizing that educational calendars and schedules should be aligned with climatic realities and the health requirements of students. The current appeal seeks to bring these concerns to the forefront of administrative action, aiming to foster a more responsive and considerate approach from the government towards educational matters.
