Patiala Traffic Snarls as Farmers Join PSPCL Staff Protest Over Power Supply

Traffic in Patiala was severely disrupted on Tuesday as farmer unions, protesting erratic power supply during the critical paddy sowing season, joined a demonstration by contractual employees of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). The convergence of two separate agitations led to extensive road blockades, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that protesters blocked both sides of the road near Fountain Chowk and Sherawala Chowk. Traffic police faced challenges in managing diversions, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded for prolonged periods amid sweltering heat and high humidity. The congestion quickly spread to other parts of the city, resulting in long queues of vehicles as motorists sought alternative routes.

Commuters expressed frustration over the hardships caused by the protests. Sandeep Singh, who was caught in the gridlock near Seranwala Gate, described being stranded for nearly an hour in oppressive weather conditions. He highlighted that ordinary citizens, uninvolved in the disputes, were bearing the brunt of the disruptions. Poonam Singla, stuck on a scooter with her young son, questioned the translation of grievances against authorities into hardship for the general public.

The prolonged gridlock also contributed to minor accidents and heated exchanges among drivers attempting to navigate out of the congestion, further exacerbating the situation. Yashpal, an e-rickshaw driver, voiced his discontent with what he perceived as an unequal response from the administration. He alleged that traffic was cleared swiftly for VIP movement, while ordinary commuters were left to manage on their own, reinforcing the feeling that the common man was disproportionately affected.

The protest by farmer unions is primarily focused on addressing issues related to the erratic power supply that has been impacting agricultural activities during the peak paddy sowing season. Farmers rely heavily on consistent electricity to operate irrigation systems, and disruptions at this crucial juncture can lead to significant crop losses. The agricultural sector in Punjab is a cornerstone of the state’s economy, and challenges faced by farmers often have broader economic implications.

Simultaneously, the contractual employees of PSPCL were engaged in their own protest, likely seeking resolution of their pending demands, which often include issues such as regularisation of service, timely payment of wages, and improved working conditions. The joining of forces between the farmer unions and the PSPCL employees amplified the scale and impact of the demonstration, leading to the widespread traffic paralysis across Patiala.

The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is the state-owned power generation and distribution company responsible for ensuring a reliable electricity supply to both urban and rural areas of Punjab. Issues concerning power supply are sensitive, particularly in an agrarian state like Punjab, where agriculture is heavily dependent on electricity for irrigation and other farming operations. Erratic power supply can have severe consequences for crop yields and farmer incomes.

The confluence of these two protests highlights underlying issues of governance and service delivery. The grievances of both farmers and contractual employees point towards systemic challenges in managing public utilities and addressing the concerns of various stakeholder groups. The traffic disruptions serve as a visible manifestation of these unresolved issues, impacting the daily lives of citizens and raising questions about the effectiveness of communication and conflict resolution mechanisms between the government, state-run corporations, and the public.

As the protests continued, authorities were expected to engage with the agitating groups to find a resolution and restore normal traffic flow. The situation underscored the complex interplay of economic, agricultural, and labour issues that often converge to create significant public disturbances, requiring careful handling and prompt intervention from the state administration.
