A month-long nationwide campaign focused on soil health conservation and sustainable farming practices has successfully concluded in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district, reaching approximately 6,000 farmers and other agricultural stakeholders.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’, which ran from June 1 to June 30, aimed to educate farmers on reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides while promoting scientific and eco-friendly agricultural methods.
The campaign was collaboratively executed by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Chamba, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), and other allied government departments. Two dedicated teams, comprising scientists from KVK and officials from the collaborating departments, traversed various regions of Chamba district to conduct awareness activities.
Dr Dharminder Kumar, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK-Chamba, elaborated on the initiative’s objectives. He stated that the campaign was designed to promote soil health conservation, minimize the overuse of chemical inputs, and encourage the adoption of scientific and sustainable farming techniques. The overarching theme of the campaign was “Save Soil, Save Farming, Save Farmers,” underscoring the critical role of healthy soil in ensuring productive agriculture, robust farmer livelihoods, and the nation’s long-term economic well-being.
During the awareness camps, farmers received detailed guidance on balanced nutrient management strategies, the principles and application of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the importance and methods of soil testing, and the increased utilization of organic and natural farming inputs. These practices are crucial for maintaining soil fertility and enhancing agricultural productivity over the long term.
The program emphasized that adopting environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices not only contributes to increased crop production but also plays a vital role in the conservation of natural resources for future generations. Through interactive sessions, farmer dialogues, and technical guidance, participants were motivated to integrate these principles into their farming routines.
The Khet Bachao Abhiyan aligns with national efforts to bolster the agricultural sector by ensuring its sustainability and improving the economic standing of farmers. Soil health is recognized as a fundamental component of agricultural resilience, directly impacting crop yields, the quality of produce, and the overall health of the ecosystem. Initiatives like these are pivotal in addressing challenges such as soil degradation, climate change impacts on agriculture, and the increasing need for food security.
The collaboration between KVK, the Department of Agriculture, and ATMA highlights a multi-agency approach to agricultural extension services in the region. Such coordinated efforts are essential for disseminating the latest scientific knowledge and best practices to the farming community effectively. The success of the campaign in reaching a significant number of farmers indicates a growing awareness and receptiveness towards sustainable agricultural methods within the Chamba district.
The KVK network, established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between agricultural research and its application at the farm level. These centers are instrumental in conducting on-farm research, frontline demonstrations, and vocational training for farmers. The Khet Bachao Abhiyan is one such significant outreach program designed to empower farmers with knowledge and tools to adopt practices that are both economically viable and environmentally sound.
By focusing on saving soil, the campaign implicitly addresses the broader goal of making farming a more sustainable and profitable profession. Healthy soil is more productive, requires fewer external inputs, and is less susceptible to environmental stresses like drought and erosion. This, in turn, leads to better incomes for farmers and contributes to the stability of the agricultural economy.
The month-long intensive campaign involved extensive fieldwork, where scientists and agriculture officials interacted directly with farmers, understanding their challenges and providing tailored solutions. This hands-on approach ensures that the information disseminated is relevant to the local context and practical for farmers to implement. The sustained engagement over a month also allows for follow-up and reinforcement of the learned practices.
The successful conclusion of the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ in Chamba district is expected to have a positive ripple effect, encouraging farmers in neighboring areas to adopt similar soil conservation and sustainable farming techniques. The campaign’s emphasis on organic and natural farming inputs also aligns with the growing consumer demand for chemical-free produce, potentially opening new market opportunities for farmers who adopt these methods.
