Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district continued a large-scale anti-militancy operation on Thursday, entering its sixth consecutive day, as they search for a second suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba militant. The operation, which began on July 4, intensified following specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of two militants in the Meemandar–Chanapora area.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that joint teams comprising the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been conducting extensive searches. Exchange of fire between security forces and militants has occurred twice since the operation commenced—first on Saturday evening and again on Wednesday morning. Officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining militant, believed to be hiding within the operational zone.
On Wednesday, security forces successfully neutralized Zakir Ahmad Ganai, a local commander associated with Lashkar-e-Toiba, during the ongoing operation. Ganai, a resident of Motalhama village in the Kulgam district, had reportedly joined the militant ranks in September 2023, according to official statements. The operation in Shopian is slated to persist until the area is fully secured and the remaining militant is apprehended or neutralized, underscoring the security forces’ commitment to restoring normalcy in the region.
The continuous presence of militants in specific areas has prompted sustained security responses, with operations like the one in Shopian designed to dismantle militant infrastructure and prevent further subversive activities. The strategy involves meticulous ground-level searches and coordinated efforts between different security agencies to achieve a comprehensive sweep of the targeted zones. The protracted nature of the operation indicates the challenging terrain and the determined efforts required to ensure the complete sanitization of the area.
Local authorities have emphasized that such operations are crucial for maintaining peace and security, particularly in regions that have historically faced security challenges. The prolonged nature of the Shopian operation reflects the complex operational environment and the stringent protocols followed by security forces to minimize collateral damage while ensuring the safety of personnel and the public. The objective remains to eradicate militant presence and foster a secure environment conducive to development and normalcy.
