SRINAGAR: Educational institutions across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are set to resume normal academic activities on Monday, July 27, as the government has decided against extending the ongoing summer vacation. The decision follows an improvement in weather conditions across the region after a prolonged period of adverse weather.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that officials from the School Education Department confirmed the reopening schedule, directing all government and recognised private schools to commence classes as per the original timetable. The move comes after multiple extensions to the summer break, initially implemented due to heatwave conditions and subsequently due to heavy rainfall and flash flood warnings.
The summer vacations for schools in the Kashmir Division and the winter zones of the Jammu Division were initially announced to run from July 6 to July 19. This period was intended to provide respite from the prevailing heatwave. However, escalating temperatures led to the first extension of the break until July 22.
Further complications arose with inclement weather, including heavy rainfall and warnings of flash floods, prompting the administration to extend the holiday further. The break was subsequently prolonged until July 26 as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. Forecasts from the Meteorological Department indicating heavy rainfall and potential flash floods between July 20 and July 23 also contributed to the extended closure.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo had previously indicated that schools would reopen on July 27. Officials on Sunday reiterated that this schedule remains firm, with the current improvement in weather making it feasible to resume regular schooling. The decision aims to minimise further disruption to the academic calendar while ensuring the safety of students, taking into account the recent weather advisories and their subsequent abatement.
The School Education Department has issued directives to all educational bodies to prepare for the resumption of classes, ensuring that necessary arrangements are in place for the commencement of academic sessions. This ensures that students can return to their studies without further interruption, contributing to the continuity of education across the Union Territory.
The reopening of schools is anticipated to bring a sense of normalcy back to the region’s educational landscape, allowing students to engage in their academic pursuits following a period of disruption caused by a combination of extreme weather events and safety precautions taken by the administration. The authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation to ensure timely interventions should any further unforeseen circumstances arise.
