The Chief Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, has outlined a comprehensive vision to make Karnataka a global leader in deep technologies. This ambition is supported by the establishment of new institutions and policies designed to attract investment, nurture talent, and facilitate the commercialization of emerging technologies. The state is actively seeking partnerships with industry leaders and global technology firms to achieve its goals.
AI University and Innovation Hub Planned
A key initiative is the planned establishment of India’s first government-backed Artificial Intelligence University. This institution will serve as a center for learning, research, and collaboration, aiming to produce world-class AI talent and researchers. Discussions have already been held with major technology companies, including Google, to ensure industry participation in developing the university’s curriculum and infrastructure.
Furthermore, the state intends to create an AI Innovation Hub, which will bring together startups, academia, and industry experts to develop AI-driven solutions for real-world challenges. This hub is envisioned to foster a dynamic environment for research and development, accelerating the adoption of AI across various sectors.
Advancements in Nanotechnology and Quantum Technologies
Karnataka is also making significant strides in nanotechnology. The state is determined to position Bengaluru as a global hub for deep technologies, including nanotechnology, AI, semiconductors, biotechnology, and quantum technologies. This commitment was underscored by the inauguration of Bengaluru INDIA NANO 2026, India’s premier international nanotechnology conference and exhibition. The event highlighted how nanotechnology is transforming sectors such as healthcare, electronics, energy, agriculture, and defense.
In the realm of quantum technologies, Karnataka has unveiled a strategic roadmap with a vision to build a substantial quantum economy by 2035. This roadmap focuses on developing talent, enhancing research and development, supporting indigenous hardware development, and fostering global partnerships. The state has committed significant resources to this endeavor, aiming to establish itself as a leader in quantum innovation. The formation of a dedicated Quantum Task Force and plans for a ‘Quantum City’ are integral to this strategy, ensuring the development of cutting-edge infrastructure and a skilled talent pipeline.
Expanding Infrastructure Beyond Bengaluru
Recognizing the need for balanced growth, Karnataka is also focusing on expanding world-class infrastructure beyond its capital, Bengaluru. The government plans to introduce policies within the next 100 days to encourage industries to establish operations in other cities of Karnataka, offering highly affordable office spaces. This initiative aims to spread investment, talent, and digital growth across the state, reducing migration to Bengaluru and improving opportunities in other regions.
In addition to technological advancements, the state is also prioritizing sustainable digital infrastructure by planning next-generation green data centers. These centers are expected to support the state’s growing AI ambitions while ensuring environmentally sustainable growth, powered by renewable energy sources.
