SRINAGAR, Aug 19 — United States Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, experienced the serene beauty of Srinagar on Wednesday by taking a traditional ‘shikara’ ride on the iconic Dal Lake. The visit marked a significant engagement for the envoy during his trip to Jammu and Kashmir.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Ambassador Gor’s itinerary included a meeting with the then Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at his official residence in Gupkar, shortly after his arrival in Srinagar. Following the political engagement, the ambassador proceeded directly to the Dal Lake.
Accompanied by his security detail and officials from the US Embassy, Ambassador Gor boarded a shikara near Nehru Park. He spent approximately an hour gliding across the placid waters, taking in the picturesque surroundings that Dal Lake is renowned for globally. The shikara ride is a quintessential experience for visitors to the region, offering a unique perspective of the lake’s floating gardens and the life that thrives on its surface.
During a joint press briefing with Chief Minister Abdullah, Ambassador Gor expressed optimism regarding the safety of Jammu and Kashmir for American travellers. He indicated that the US would reconsider its travel advisories for the region. “The United States puts out travel warnings and every so often, we re-evaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make any big announcements here today, but it is something we are going to look at,” Gor stated.
Ambassador Gor highlighted the importance of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India, describing it as an “incredibly beautiful place.” His remarks suggested a positive assessment of the efforts made by both the central government and the state administration, led by Chief Minister Abdullah, in enhancing the security landscape to make the region safer for tourists and visitors. The envoy’s participation in local cultural experiences like the shikara ride, coupled with his diplomatic engagements, underscored the US’s continued interest in the region’s development and stability.
