E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, a prominent senior Congress leader and former Union Minister of State, has passed away at the age of 78. He died at his residence in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, following a period of illness. Natchiappan, born on September 29, 1947, had a distinguished career in Indian politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha and also as a Lok Sabha member representing the Sivaganga constituency. He held the position of Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry from June 2013 to May 2014.
Natchiappan was also an advocate in the Supreme Court of India and actively participated in national and international forums. He addressed the United Nations General Assembly on two occasions in October 2008, speaking on UN peacekeeping operations and globalization and independence. He was a co-founder and President of the Parliamentarian Forum on Human Rights, an organization dedicated to addressing human rights violations. Throughout his parliamentary career, Natchiappan served on numerous committees, including those related to Science and Technology, Environment and Forests, Government Assurances, and Human Resource Development. His tenure in the Rajya Sabha was from June 2010 to June 2016, and he previously served in the Lok Sabha from October 1999 to February 2004.
A legal scholar, Natchiappan held master’s degrees in Arts and Law, along with a Ph.D. His academic background complemented his extensive political and legal career, allowing him to contribute to policy discussions and legislative processes.

The former minister’s active participation in parliamentary committees demonstrated his in-depth understanding of various governance aspects.
