A rusted mortar shell, suspected to be an unexploded ordnance from a past conflict, was recovered and subsequently defused by the Army in a village in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. Officials confirmed the incident, which caused no loss of life or property.
The Chenab Times has learned that the explosive device was discovered by villagers in Bagyala Dhara, a locality within the Haveli tehsil of Poonch district. Following the discovery, local authorities were alerted, prompting the immediate deployment of the Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad to the scene. The squad, equipped to handle hazardous materials, took charge of the situation and successfully neutralized the mortar shell at the exact location where it was found.
The recovery of such old ordnance highlights the lingering legacy of past militancy and security operations in the region. While this particular incident concluded without casualties, the presence of unexploded shells poses a persistent risk to civilian populations in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
